The Position
Safety Specialists are assigned to the Division of Industrial Relations to promote recognized safety practices among businesses covered by State and federal safety and health laws and regulations.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
The Safety Specialist, Enforcement position is in the Department of Business and Industry, Division of Industrial Relations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Enforcement Section in Reno, NV. The Safety Specialist will undergo training necessary to perform safety inspections at workplaces throughout Northern Nevada. Once trained, the Safety Specialist will perform inspections independently and enforce State and federal safety laws and regulations (e.g. NRS 618, NAC 618, 29 CFR 1910, 29 CFR 1926). Specific responsibilities will include conducting safety, health, and accident and discrimination investigations, preparing and submitting case file reports, providing technical advice and assistance to governmental officials, employees, employers, etc., and receiving oral complaints and referrals. Incumbent will be required to drive; therefore, a valid drivers license is required. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in occupational safety and health, safety engineering, or related field and two years of experience which included primary responsibility in four of the following areas in construction and/or general industry hazard identification, hazard evaluation in relation to existing standards, hazard control design, hazard controls verification, safety/health program design, and safety/health program evaluation; OR Bachelor's degree in biological or physical sciences, or engineering, and four years of experience as described above; OR certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and two years of experience which included primary responsibility in four of the following areas in construction and/or general industry: hazard identification, hazard evaluation in relation to existing standards, hazard control design, hazard controls verification, safety/health program design, and safety/health program evaluation; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and six years of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Safety Representative, Enforcement in Nevada State service.
Special Notes
    The ability to travel at least 25% of the time is required.
    This position requires Standby/Call Back status.

    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
