The Position
Parole & Probation Specialists perform technical duties in administrative functions and units, which do not require peace officer status. Duties include casework services, investigations, tracking and monitoring assigned parolees and probationers, pre-sentence investigations, determination of restitution and supervision fees, and referral services for the assigned unit. Positions in this series obtain and verify information; prepare and process case files and recommend appropriate action; and monitor offender activities. Incumbents are not Peace Officer's Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified and do not perform law enforcement functions such as conducting field inspections of offenders' worksite or residence, conducting surveillance, searches and arrests, or transporting prisoners to court or detention facilities.
The Parole and Probation Division (NPP) is recruiting to fill a Parole and Probation Supervisor vacancy at Carson City Headquarters. This position will supervise the Parole and Probation Specialist II's and III's in the Fugitive Apprehension and the Pre-Release Units; delegate and review work assignments, provide training and complete performance evaluations, assessing staffing needs to develop the work schedules of line staff; analyze reports; resolve issues; and ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies at the State and Federal levels; and develop, implement, and update procedures for a criminal justice program. The incumbent will assess equipment, training, travel, and staffing needs; prepare cost projections and submit a preliminary budget to management for the indigent funding program; prepare statistical reports for submission to management; and conduct audits and quality control checks for assigned areas of authority.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, social or behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or related field and two years of advanced level or lead professional experience performing casework services and pre-sentence investigations, interviewing offenders in order to write comprehensive reports to the court regarding the offenders' crime, making recommendations in court, and preparing and presenting reports for a court of law; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and four years of professional experience as described above; OR two years of experience as a Parole & Probation Specialist IV in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
The Examination
PAROLE AND PROBATION SUPERVISOR (12.619) Training and Experience Exam
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

Qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
1) Describe your experience and coursework, which involved planning, organizing, coordinating, and supervising the day-to-day activities of parole and probation specialists where supervision included reviewing pre-sentencing reports, monitoring suspense dates, establishing priorities, establishing work performance standards, evaluating performance and initiating disciplinary action as required.
2) Describe your experience and coursework related to determining the training needs of staff, and providing training and guidance for staff development.
3) Describe your experience assisting higher-level management preparing reports and statistical analyses and participating in the development of the budget for a work unit.
4) Describe your experience implementing federal, state, and agency regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines related to program operations and recommending changes to established policies, procedures and guidelines while providing assigned staff with explanations, clarifications and interpretations of policies and procedures.
