The Position
Cartographic/Graphics Technician's produce maps which are geographic representations facilitating a special understanding of objects, concepts, conditions, processes or events in the world; provide illustrations for publications, presentations and grant applications/reports; and create manual covers, forms, charts, graphs and materials.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. This position is located at the Division Office of the Nevada Division of State Parks (Division) in Carson City, Nevada. Under general supervision, the incumbent provides GIS/GPS (Geographic Information Systems/Global Positioning Systems) mapping and cartographic support to the Division. The position requires a working knowledge of and experience with basic GIS data and Esri ArcGIS software functionality; spatial relationships; and theories, principles, and concepts related to GIS technology. The incumbent must have the ability to create and edit GIS data and databases, perform spatial and attribute queries, solve simple GIS problems, and capture, import and process GPS and AutoCAD data.
Ideal candidates have a general knowledge of basic cartographic principles, map projections and coordinate systems, along with various sources of information and research techniques. The ability to create map layouts and publications suitable for printing and/or website display is desired. The selected candidate must establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Duties and Responsibilities include: 1. Compiles and integrates GIS data from a wide variety of sources and data formats for inclusion in map publications; 2. Creates and edits geospatial data and handles GPS data collection and digitizing techniques; 3. Creates and edits maps and illustrations for publication using the Esri ArcGIS suite of software products, along with other desktop publishing applications; 4. Evaluate and interpret end user information requirements and develops appropriate mapping products and/or solutions; 5. Works with current Windows operating systems, including Microsoft Office suite and Publication software applications; 6. Assists in the development of grant proposals for project funding as appropriate (e.g., provide maps, exhibits, etc., and/or technical language for proposals within area of expertise); 7. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant technology, equipment, and/or systems; and 8. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school and four years of related experience, three of which included performing cartography work and experience in one or more of the following: computer-based desktop publishing, graphic arts, mapping or drafting; OR one year of experience as a Cartographic/Graphics Technician II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    An Associate of Applied Science degree in computer graphics, multimedia, geography, geology or closely related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
Additional Position Criteria
    Experience working with GIS/GPS principles, systems, data and technologies is required.
    Experience with Esri ArcGIS suite, including geodatabase management, data editing, and georeferencing is required.
    AutoCAD experience is required.

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.
