Agriculturists perform a variety of inspections and enforcement duties related to regulated agricultural programs such as seed testing and seed certification, commercial pest control licensing, commercial nursery inspection and licensing, vertebrate pest control, noxious weeds, insect and plant disease quarantine surveys, and commercial feed and agricultural product grading.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. This is a permanent, full-time position located at the Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Industry Plant Pathology Laboratory at Sparks, Nevada. This position functions as a plant health diagnostician responsible for performing daily clinical procedures and testing for submitted plant disease samples under the supervision of the Plant Pathologist. The advertised Agriculturist 1 position will under-fill the Agriculturist 2 position and may be progressed to the higher level with the supervisor's approval and when the minimum qualifications of the higher level have been met. Successful candidate will also be actively involved in the development of fee-based plant health assessment services.
Specific duties include, but not limited to, daily logging in received plant or soil samples, verifying sample and payment information, communicating with clients on testing needs, conducting diagnostic tests prescribed by the plant pathologist, reporting results to clients, and providing after-service customer care. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in agricultural science or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and professional experience which provided experience in regulatory agricultural programs such as seed certification, pest control licensing, or enforcement of regulations related to agriculture and horticulture; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and two years of technical inspection and enforcement experience related to agricultural programs. |

Restricted use Pesticide Applicator's Certificate is required as an ongoing condition of employment for some positions in the series. |

A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. |

Travel up to 25% of the time is required. |
