The Position
Curators perform a broad range of professional and technical museum work involving, but not limited to, assessment, evaluation, survey, inventory, preservation, research, education and planning for a specific collection and/or program area within a museum.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This is a full-time, permanent position within the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Division of Museums and History, Nevada State Museum, Carson City. The Anthropology Curator I is responsible for maintaining the Nevada State Museum (NSM), Carson City's Northern Nevada Archaeological inventory comprised of site forms, site reports, base maps, and NSM archaeological project records and archives. This individual will also conduct records searches for cultural resource management (CRM) firms using the Nevada Cultural Resources Information System (NVCRIS) as well as the museum's archives. Additional responsibilities include the following: assist other staff with their collections management duties, publication production and sales, assist staff and researchers with collections and archival research, and complete collections and archival tasks for Bureau of Land Management collections and archives curated by NSM. The Curator I uses MS Access on a daily basis in addition to other MS Office programs and other databases. ***THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in history, prehistory, natural history, museum studies, education, or closely related field plus one year of technical experience in a museum. This experience must have included collections registration, cataloging, basic archival research and/or developing, promoting, executing and evaluating educational programming; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
    This position may require to travel at least 25% of the time.
