The Position
Agriculturists perform a variety of inspections and enforcement duties related to regulated agricultural programs such as seed testing and seed certification, commercial pest control licensing, commercial nursery inspection and licensing, vertebrate pest control, noxious weeds, insect and plant disease quarantine surveys, and commercial feed and agricultural product grading.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
This position works under the general direction of the Plant Industry Administrator and the Environmental Scientist IV in administering the Commercial Pest Control Operator Licensing & Enforcement Program in the Nevada Department of Agriculture. Responsibilities include overall program management; budget development and monitoring; training, supervision and evaluation of program staff performing duties in the inspection, investigation and enforcement of Federal pesticide laws and State regulations related to pesticides and required pest control practices. The position requires strong oral and written communication skills involving report writing, pest control study manual revisions, exam development, preparation of enforcement and legal documents, providing clear direction to staff, and public speaking. The incumbent is responsible for establishing and coordinating review committees and hearings to address disputed pest control related fines or other administrative actions/penalties. This position has a travel requirement of up to 25%. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in agricultural science or related field and three years of journey level experience in a variety of plant industry programs such as seed certification, vertebrate pest control, licensing of pesticide applicators and pest control firms, and agricultural produce grading; OR two years of experience as an Agriculturist III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
    Restricted use Pesticide Applicator's Certificate is required as an ongoing condition of employment for some positions in the series.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    This position requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
