The Position
Developmental Specialists provide individual and group clinical, developmental and support services for individuals of all ages who have, or who may be at risk for, developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or related conditions, and social, emotional, and/or behavioral disorders.
This position is located within the Department of Health and Human Services, Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD) - Nevada Early Intervention Services in Reno, NV. ADSD provides an atmosphere of innovative thinking, teamwork, friendly co-workers, and provides a positive working environment. The mission of ADSD is to provide leadership and advocacy in the planning, development and delivery of a high quality, comprehensive support service system across the lifespan to allow all of Nevada's elders, children and adults with disabilities or special health care needs, to live independent, meaningful and dignified lives to the greatest extent possible.
The incumbent will underfill the Developmental Specialist 3 position and will advance to the next level in the series upon recommendation of the Appointing Authority, meeting the minimum qualifications and satisfactory performance. This position provides home-based specialized instruction and case management services to children under the age of three with developmental delays or disabilities (that can include children with autism, vision and hearing impairments, genetic syndromes and prematurity) under the Part C federal regulations of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The incumbent also serves on multi-disciplinary teams to determine program eligibility and services. Applicants selected for a Developmental Specialist position will be required to obtain an Endorsement License in Early Childhood Special Education if they do not already have one. Experience working with children birth to three years old with developmental delays or disabilities and families is a requirement of this position. This position will require up to 50% travel within the service delivery area, which is primarily Washoe County. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in early childhood special education, human growth and development, psychology, counseling, social work or closely related field and one year of paraprofessional experience providing developmental, special education, or intervention or treatment-oriented services for individuals who have or may be at risk for developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or related conditions; OR an equivalent combination of education at or above a Bachelor's degree and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for fingerprinting.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Incumbents must possess or obtain an endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education issued by the Nevada Department of Education or a comparable certification issued by the Nevada Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part C office within three years of appointment to this series or a comparable certification. (This license requirement applies only to those positions directly involved with children from birth to eight years of age with developmental delays.)
    This position requires the ability to travel up to 50% of the time.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
Additional Position Criteria
    Experience working with children between the ages of birth to three who have or are at risk for developmental delays is required.
