The Position
Under administrative direction, plan, coordinate and direct the law enforcement activities and operations of a geographical region in a large division within the Department of Public Safety (DPS); serve as the deputy chief of a small to mid-sized division charged with responsibility for complex investigations; or serve as the chief of the records and identification bureau. Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives.
The list established from this recruitment will be used for future vacancies that may occur statewide for all divisions. YOU WILL ONLY BE CONSIDERED FOR PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN THE GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS YOU SPECIFY IN YOUR APPLICATION. THEREFORE, YOU MUST SELECT ANY AND ALL CITIES WHERE YOU ARE WILLING TO ACCEPT A PROMOTIONAL ASSIGNMENT AT THE TIME OF YOUR APPLICATION. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF YOUR DESIRED GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS (DUTY STATIONS) AT THE TIME OF YOUR APPLICATION, YOU ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO SELECT ALL GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS (STATEWIDE). The examination will consist of a training and experience analysis weighted at 70% and a practical assessment, to include a written exercise, weighted at 30%. Please note that your score from the 2018 recruitment cannot be transferred to this recruitment, as the exam has changed. POINTS ON THE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE EXAMINATION WILL NOT BE GRANTED FOR INCOMPLETE ANSWERS OR IF REQUESTED DOCUMENTATION IS NOT PROVIDED. Please read each question carefully, detail your experience in the requested areas, provide start and end dates for any questions that request your years of experience, and attach all requested supporting documentation. Qualified candidates will receive an invitation to the practical assessment examination upon closure of this recruitment. The practical assessment examinations will be held in Carson City and Las Vegas on October 7th and 8th. Las Vegas will also hold examinations on October 14th if needed.

The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).
DPS CAPTAIN TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE EXAM
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 70%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

Those applicants deemed amongst the most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
