The Position
Correctional Sergeants and Lieutenants have charge of an assigned watch or major area in a State correctional institution/facility and supervise subordinate officers to ensure the safe custody,discipline and welfare of inmates.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. The Nevada Division of Child & Family Services (DCFS) is seeking a Correctional Sergeant for the Summit View Youth Center (SVYC), a 48-bed secure facility for male youth age 14 to 18 located in North Las Vegas, NV. SVYC goal is to promote positive self-growth, create change in behavior, attitudes, values and ways of thinking through education, therapeutic treatment and appropriate medical and mental health services. Responsibilities include: processing new arrival youth and discharges; transporting youth to outside appointments; developing/implementing new or revised security policies; maintaining overall security and safety of the facility; providing guidance to group supervisors; responding to emergency situations; identifying deficiencies and corrective actions; updating policies or procedures; ensuring security policies and procedures are followed; maintaining proficiency in Control Room operations; conducting both unclothed and clothed youth body searches; responding to hostile or aggressive youth behavior; providing or assisting in de-escalation techniques; if necessary, using physical force to subdue violent youth; completing facility and room searches thoroughly; supervising youth in all youth occupied areas; processing visitors and supervising visitors and youth; displaying substantial knowledge of and application of emergency procedures; supervising emergency incidents; completing and maintaining POST certification; operating all equipment and programs; performing assigned duties with minimal supervision; observing youth and interacting with them in a positive and therapeutic manner; displaying positive professional behavior at all times.
These are full time positions that include a variable work agreement that may be scheduled to work hours and days different than 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday such as swing shift and weekends. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    One year of work experience as a Senior Correctional Officer in Nevada State service; OR three years of experience as a journey level Correctional Officer in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards Training (POST-Category 3) requirements including the physical agility testing as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Applicants must pass a strict annual physical examination in accordance with Nevada State Prisons Standards and to meet requirements of the provisions of the Heart/Lung Bills.
    Equivalency statement: 1 year as a Correctional Officer plus a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field; OR 2 years as a Correctional Officer plus an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
The Examination
CORRECTIONAL SERGEANT 13.311 Training and Experience Exam
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.
