The Position
Correctional Nurses provide professional nursing care to patients in a correctional setting.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Correctional Nurses provide professional nursing care by identifying patient health care needs; making comprehensive clinical observations/evaluations of health needs; and recording/reporting indicative signs/symptoms of physical and mental condition. The position prepares nursing care plans; evaluates needs and develops nursing diagnoses/plans for treatment, services and health education based on the present and predicted needs of the inmate; identifies immediate and long-term care goals; conducts sick calls for inmates with medical complaints; identify inmates requiring immediate medical treatment; and obtain physician's orders for treatment. As a Correctional Nurse II, you will administer medication; ensure correct time, dosage and route of administration; deliver medication to inmates confined to cells; obtain and distribute non-prescription medications; count controlled medications, needles, syringes, and sharps to ensure security; and monitor inmate for medication side effects and/or allergic reaction. Nurses provide emergency medical treatments such as CPR and first aid; are responsible to maintain safety, health and the wellbeing of inmates in the therapeutic environment; assist in physically restraining hostile or combative patients; coordinate and schedule outside medical appointments for inmates; and arrange for transportation to outside medical appointments. **Please ensure your application reflects your current nursing license information. This is a Per Diem position. The candidate must be available to work a minimum of 16 hours per two-week pay period. Shifts may be 8, 10 or 12 hours, depending upon the needs of the facility. This position requires availability tot work at any of the three southern institutions. The candidate must be reliable, have excellent communication skills, and be able to apply critical thinking, assessment skills, intervention and evaluation skills to be able to make quick but accurate medical decisions. Incumbent must be able to work under pressure, be able to adjust to change, and be a team player.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
License as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which was in a correctional or institutional setting; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
A Bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or Associates degree in nursing and one year of experience.
Probationary employees must successfully complete pre-service training (PST) provided by the department.
As a condition of appointment and continuing employment, positions are subject to call-back, overtime on short notice, stand-by status, and must work various hours and/or shifts including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
Out of state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of employment.

A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.

A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required.
CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Some positions require a valid driver's license at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
