The Position
Conservation Crew Supervisors supervise crews of Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC) inmates and/or Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) staff, maintain security, and provide training in equipment use and safety in completing projects in resource conservation and/or fire management.
Incumbents perform in a continuing trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. The Division of Forestry's mission is to provide professional natural resource and wildland fire management services to enhance, conserve and protect forest, rangeland and watershed values, endangered plants and other native flora. This position is located at the Minden-Tahoe Airport, Minden, NV. Under general supervision, the Conservation Crew Supervisor 2 - Helitack will have a shared responsibility to oversee up to 5 to 6 seasonal helicopter managers and 15 to 16 seasonal firefighters, two seasonal fuel truck drivers, and up to 30 National Guard Members during fire assignments between April and October. Incumbent is a specialist in helicopter operations and supervises helicopter managers, helicopter crewmembers/firefighters, provide rapid initial response for wildland fires, fire use projects and resource management projects. Provide leadership and direction while implementing tactics such as: direct and indirect fire line construction, hot-spotting, backfiring, burnout operations, water delivery systems, tree felling, brush removal and mop-up operations. Coordinate and implement training for helitack courses and workshops; provide technical expertise of helicopter projects within the state; train, supervise and evaluate the performance of seasonal firefighters; ensure safety and welfare of all assigned personnel in adverse and/or remote working conditions.
During fire season, incumbents perform the following duties: prepare helicopters for mission response; coordinate and direct helitack crews in support of initial fire suppression activates, natural disasters, search and rescue, and other emergencies. In the off-season, incumbents conduct formal adult training in conservation and natural resources activities. Assist Camp and Resource Programs with projects including, but not limited to, aerial seeding, vegetation management/fuel reduction, inmate supervision, updating all training records for seasonal staff, and managing seasonal firefighting equipment/re-orders. Incumbents must be qualified as a NWCG Firefighter I (FFT1) (or higher), NWCG Helicopter Crew Member, and have an open NWCG Helicopter Manager Taskbook at time of application, and must maintain these qualifications for the duration of employment. Incumbents will be required to obtain a Nevada's commercials driver's license with air brake, tanker and hazardous material endorsements within one year of appointment. To verify these eligibility requirements for the position, a copy of your Red Card, or equivalent, MUST be attached to application at time of submittal. Incumbents must pass a work capacity test at the arduous level prior to appointment and for continued employment. The test consists of a three (3) mile walk, carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack, in less than forty-five (45) minutes.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    NWCG Firefighter I qualified and graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of logging, construction, ranching, wildland firefighting, natural resource-related and/or physically active conservation-related experience, one year of which must have been supervising staff and/or inmate crews; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
    Applicants are required to pass a physical agility test prior to appointment and as a condition for continuing employment.
    Possession of a Class B driver's license with air brake endorsement is required within one year and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Positions must pass a strict annual physical examination according to agency standards and to meet requirements of the provisions of the Heart/Lung Bills.
    All positions must obtain Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (CPR & AED) American Heart Association certification during the probationary period and maintain certification as a condition of continuing employment.
Special Requirements
    Possession of a valid driver's license is required at the time of application and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this class have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this class must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    Applicants are required to undergo a Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC) background investigation prior to being considered for employment.
    Positions are required to work weekends and/or holidays and must be available for emergency assignments up to 14 days in duration.
    Positions must complete a 40-hour pre-service training in supervision of inmates after hire.
    In order to be allocated to the Conservation Crew Supervisor II level, incumbents must be NWCG Firefighter I qualified as outlined in the Wildland Fire Qualification System Guide, PMS 310-1 as developed by the NWCG.
Additional Position Criteria
