Motor Vehicle Inspectors check public vehicle identification numbers (VIN) and compare those to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards Labels (FMVSS) and confidential vehicle identification numbers (CVIN), and provide VIN assignments to vehicles that are homemade or where the number has been damaged, removed or obliterated. Incumbents research vehicle ownership through State-owned programs and/or the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) or other entities, and perform a variety of safety inspections to enforce the laws and regulations specified in chapters 482, 484, and 486 of the NRS.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.This position is located in Elko in our Field Services Division. Under direct supervision performs vehicle inspection work by checking public and confidential vehicle identification numbers (VIN); assigning VIN's to vehicles that are homemade or where the number has been damaged; researching vehicles ownership; performing a variety of safety inspections to enforce the laws and regulations specified in chapter 484 of the NRS; perform related duties as assigned.The Department of Motor Vehicles is required to comply with 49 CFR 1572.103 which provides that an agency involved in the issuance of Real ID Driver's Licenses shall not knowing employ a person if they have been convicted of any of the felonies listed under this regulation, which includes Espionage, Sedition, Treason, Terrorism, Transportation Security Incident, Improper Transportation of a Hazardous Material, Unlawful Possession of Explosives, Murder, Making any Threat Concerning a Lethal Device, Racketeering.
Additional Real ID criteria provides that the DMV shall not employ a person if they have been convicted of a felony within 7 years of their application or if an applicant was released from incarceration for one of these crimes within five years of their application including Unlawful Firearm Violations, Extortion, Fraud, Bribery, Smuggling, Immigration Violations, Distribution of Controlled Substances, Arson, Kidnapping, Rape or Sexual Abuse, Assault With Intent to Kill, Robbery, or Fraudulent Seaport Entry. The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required to comply with NRS 205 which provides that an agency shall not knowingly provide access to employees or contract representatives if they have been convicted of a felony for unlawful acts listed in this regulation regarding Social Security Numbers, Personal Identifying Information, Computers and Information Services, Payment Cards, Re-encoders and Scanning Devices, Credit Cards and Debit Cards. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of related work experience that involved the application of semi-skilled automotive maintenance and/or inspection work which included public contact; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
