Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This Environmental Scientist 2 position is an underfill for an Environmental Scientist 3 position located within the Bureau of Mining Regulation and Reclamation in the Regulation Branch and serves as a Mine Compliance lnspector. Mine Compliance Inspectors conduct periodic inspections of mining facilities to determine compliance with operating plans, water pollution control permit requirements and regulations. In addition, the Inspector reviews and assesses mine quarterly and semi-annual monitoring reports for compliance; reviews petroleum contaminated soil management plans submitted by mining facilities; investigates spills, releases, and associated remediation activities for soil and groundwater releases; and initiates formal enforcement and corrective actions to achieve compliance. The Inspector works with the permit writers, permittees, local, State, and Federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the general public to ensure that their respective concerns related to the water pollution control permitting program are adequately addressed. *** THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Bachelor's degree in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and eighteen months of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research, planning, and technical support; OR eighteen months of experience as an Environmental Scientist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
