The Position
Licensed Professional Engineers provide professional services involving the application of engineering principles and data, or activities in connection with public or private utilities, structures, buildings, machines, equipment or projects impacting the public welfare or the safeguarding of life, health or property.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. This position is located within the Traffic Operations Division, Carson City, Nevada. Incumbent acts as the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) expert and resource.
Duties include reviewing plans designed by the Signals, Lighting, and ITS section and the plans designed by consultants; with a particular focus on ITS elements; attending planning, project and interagency meetings as a representative of the Traffic Operations Division and an expert on ITS infrastructure, devices and implementation; answering requests for information during the contract bidding period; focusing on the ones relative to ITS designs; reviewing technical submittals for ITS devices being deployed as part of NDOT administered contracts; helping to update the Section 623 (Signals, Lighting, and ITS) of the NDOT Standard Specifications when necessary and helping to write special provisions for ITS technology by providing options for enhanced safety, mobility and efficiency; establishing and maintaining lifecycle information/costs for existing and new ITS devices; working with the Traffic Operations Planning section to schedule ITS scopes of work (these scopes of work can be included in other NDOT projects or programmed alone as separate ITS projects); developing Request For Proposals (RFP's) and agreements for ITS design support services and ITS maintenance services; performing testing to verify the functionality of new ITS installations and ensuring compliance with applicable plans, specifications, and industry standards; and evaluating new and existing ITS installations to certify that operational and data needs are being met. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Current Licensure as a Professional Engineer (P.E.)
Special Notes
    A person that is a licensed Professional Engineer in another state must become licensed as a Professional Engineer in Nevada within six months of appointment as a condition of employment.
    The practice of engineering does not include land surveying or the work ordinarily performed by persons who operate or maintain machinery or equipment.
Special Requirements
    Registration as a Professional Engineer is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
