The Position
Adult Rights Specialists provide assistance and advocacy to protect and enhance the health, safety, welfare and rights of older persons (adults 60 and older) and/or vulnerable persons (adults with intellectual, physical or related disabilities), henceforth referred to as clients.
Incumbents provide assistance to persons aged sixty years and older residing in group residential care facilities and in the community throughout Nevada to improve their quality of life, health, safety and welfare. Work at this level is characterized by problem-solving and identifying resources in the community to assist the elderly.
This position is located within the Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD) of the Department of Health and Human Services - Elder Protective Services (EPS) in Reno, NV. ADSD provides an atmosphere of innovative thinking, teamwork, friendly co-workers, and provides a positive working environment. The mission of ADSD is to provide leadership and advocacy in the planning, development and delivery of a high quality, comprehensive support service system across the lifespan to allow all of Nevada's elders, children and adults with disabilities or special health care needs, to live independent, meaningful and dignified lives to the greatest extent possible. This position will assist clients who are victims of abuse, abandonment, neglect (including self-neglect), exploitation and isolation. Duties include assisting with the inquiry and interventions for self-neglect cases, providing information and referrals to agencies that provide services to support the clients' physical, emotional, social and economic well-being including resources for financial, healthcare, legal, transportation and other service needs, and assisting social workers with more difficult abuse cases by providing follow-up to ensure services are accessed properly. Incumbents also provide elder abuse training within the community. Nevada offers sunshine and recreational opportunities including golfing, biking, off-roading, hiking, skiing, and fishing. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in social work, psychology, sociology or related social science or human services field, and one year of paraprofessional experience that included the application of rules and regulations, interviewing and eliciting information, identifying service needs, researching and resolving complaints, writing business correspondence, and public speaking; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of paraprofessional experience that included the application of rules and regulations, interviewing and eliciting information, identifying service needs, researching and resolving complaints, writing business correspondence, and public speaking; OR one year as a Family Services Specialist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
The Examination

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience.
