JOB INFORMATION

Public Health Rating and Survey Officers work under administrative direction and are responsible for the survey and evaluation of food storage, preparation and serving practices and procedures to determine compliance with United States Food and Drug Administration and Nevada laws, regulations and standards; regulate and enforce State law relating to: the Safe Drinking Water Program in Nevada; drug licensing investigations; label review, sampling and inspection of drug and cosmetic manufacturing plants; inspection of dairies and milk plants; certification of septic systems; inspection of food warehouses, traditional food and drink establishments, health facilities, and public institutions; perform as an authorized agent of the Food and Drug Commission as required.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Health Section (EHS) Program Manager, this position will survey and evaluate EHS permitted establishments and state and local environmental health specialists, for compliance with statutory requirements. This position will also act as training coordinator for EHS, conduct environmental inspections, investigate illnesses and other public health problems and revise or write new EHS regulations and policies. The Environmental Health Section functions include permitting, management, education, enforcement, consultation, and emergency response for the purpose of prevention of environmental health hazards and the promotion and protection of the public health and the environment in the following areas: Food protection; bottled water plants and distributors; cosmetic plants; public accommodations; recreational vehicle parks; institutional health; recreational swimming areas and waters; solid and liquid waste management; individual sewage disposal systems; water sanitation and emergency preparedness.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree in the life sciences or closely related field and four years of environmental health or other relevant work experience; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Health Specialist III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
Additional Position Criteria
REHS Certification is required at time of appointment.
