The Position
DPS Lieutenants are responsible for the operations and administrative functions of an assigned work unit to include overseeing law enforcement activities, services and programs within an assigned division of the Department of Public Safety (DPS); reviewing and approving reports and investigations; observing field work; coordinating staff training; managing special programs, and ensuring recordkeeping practices follow established policy and procedure. This class represents the first management level within the department and assignments are characterized by program management, budget administration, and development of goals, objectives, and performance measures. Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives.
The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill future vacancies that may occur statewide in all Divisions. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of supervisory law enforcement experience equivalent to a DPS Sergeant in Nevada State service; OR two years of experience as a DPS Sergeant in Nevada State service.
Special Notes
    Applicants must meet minimum standards for appointment as a peace officer as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
Special Requirements
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    This position is subject to call-out or call-back.
    A valid Nevada Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).
DPS Lieutenant
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

1) Do you have a college degree or college coursework from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, organizational management, business administration/management, public administration, or related field? You MUST attach transcripts or copy of diploma to your application to be awarded points.
2) Do you have advanced Nevada POST certifications or equivalent from another recognized certifying body? You MUST attach copies of your certification(s) to your application to receive credit.
3) Describe your supervisory experience including the number of years.
4) Do you have a POST approved Basic or Advanced Instructor Development class certificate? You MUST attach copies of your certificate(s) to your application to receive credit.
5) Do you have any of the following POST approved or nationally approved certified instructor training course certificates: Defensive Tactics, firearms instructor, Taser, DEA Lab Certification, Cultural Diversity, Domestic Violence, Blood borne Pathogens, etc.) or certification as a Public Safety Training Officer (PSTO) and/or Sergeant Mentor. Program should be certified by the agency providing the instruction and the applicant must have trained in that focus area within the last three years to be eligible. You MUST submit supporting documentation to receive credit.
6) Describe your experience, including the number of years, leading an assigned project or program or serving as a grant manager.
7) Describe your experience, including the number of years, working in any of the following unit assignments: Sex Offenders, House Arrest, ICE/K-9, Gang Unit, Interstate Compact Unit, Homeland Security Investigation, OCDETF cases, Intensive Supervision Unit, MAIT, Major Crime Investigation, Narcotic Task Force, etc. Please note that to receive credit, you must have spent a minimum of one year in a specialized unit.
8) Describe your experience, including the number of years, working in more than one DPS division.
9) Have you completed Nevada State Budget 101 and/or Nevada Internal Controls training course?
10) Please list any communication classes or seminars you have completed (post DPS date of hire).
