The Position
Correctional Sergeants and Lieutenants have charge of an assigned watch or major area in a State correctional institution/facility and supervise subordinate officers to ensure the safe custody,discipline and welfare of inmates.
This position supports SOUTHERN NEVADA ADULT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES (SNAMHS), Stein Hospital. The Stein Hospital is a secure forensic hospital providing inpatient forensic services for adults who are court committed, serving Southern Nevada. The Stein Hospital is located in Las Vegas, NV. The facility is recruiting for a Correctional Lieutenant position. The incumbent will have the responsibility for supervising the day to day operation of an institution/facility such as feeding, clothing, housing, transportation, and custody. Additionally, the incumbent will function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. SNAMHS is an exciting place to work with emphasis on utilizing the recovery model, developing innovative programs, increasing consumer and family involvement, educating the public through a variety of activities, and implementing a best practices clinical program. The Correctional Lieutenant directly supervises a Correctional Sergeant and several Forensic Specialist IV (shift supervisor) positions. This position will have administrative responsibility for planning, organizing, training, supervising and assisting with subordinate staff; maintaining the overall security of the facility by developing, implementing and adhering to policies and procedures. This position will serve as a member of the hospital's leadership team; conduct internal investigations as assigned by the Director; monitor and facilitate forensic specialist participation in client interdisciplinary treatment teams. The ideal candidate will have: strong problem solving and judgment skills; great leadership skills; excellent organizational and planning skills; experience guiding and developing subordinates, as well as the ability to build a productive team; excellent verbal and written communication skills and flexibility and adaptability as required by this position. Incumbent will be working an innovative variable schedule, with overtime after 40 hours per week.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    One year of work experience as a Correctional Sergeant in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards Training (POST-Category 3) requirements including physical agility testing as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Current departmental staff will not be required to go through a background check, fingerprinting or the prescreening for controlled substances.
    Applicants must pass a strict annual physical examination in accordance with Nevada State Prisons Standards and to meet requirements of the provisions of the Heart/Lung Bills.
    The following equivalencies are acceptable: 3 years as a Senior Correctional Officer, which must have included time as acting Sergeant when conducted for a vacant position (vacancy can be due to separation, military leave, administrative leave, etc.) and must be verified by the Department of Corrections Personnel office- OR 4 years as a Correctional Officer, which must have included time as acting Senior Correctional Officer as described above, plus a BA degree in Criminal Justice or related - OR 5 years as a Correctional Officer, which must have included time as acting Senior Correctional Officer as described above, plus an AA degree in Criminal Justice or related.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
The Examination

Correctional Lieutenant -NMHI Forensics
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

Qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
1) Describe your Correctional Sergeant and/or Forensic Specialist IV experience, to include the number of years in either or both of the positions mentioned.
2) Describe your experience, including the number of years, supervising professional staff in a security setting.
3) Describe your experience, including the number of years, developing AND implementing policies and procedures.
4) Describe your experience serving as Incident Commander, including the number of occasions serving in this capacity, in which you were managing incidents that involved major assault, or other significant disruptions of institutional operations that included the submission of a report summarizing the incident to institution and/or department administrators.
5) List your current Mental Health Certifications received and the total amount of completed credits for Forensic Specialist I, Forensic Specialist II, and/or Forensic Specialist III.
6) List any job-related, non-mandatory training or college course work completed (80 hours of class room training, six college credits, or equivalent combination) within the last three years.
7) Do you have a Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Corrections, Psychology or related field? List the degree level completed, type of degree, issuing institution, and date of completion.
8) Describe your experience, including the number of years, working with individuals with various behavioral and mental health disorders within a secured facility.
