The Position
Positions in this series supervise professional engineering associates, technical engineering staff, and/or engineering students; direct activities of assigned staff, organize personnel, equipment and materials, and delegate assignments; evaluate the performance of employees according to established policies and work performance standards; ensure accurate and timely completion of work assignments; and provide guidance and training.
Under general supervision, incumbents supervise technical engineering employees and perform engineering functions requiring analysis of diverse data and the exercise of judgement impacting daily operations and policy and procedure implementation. Duties result in a product or provide a service or recommendation used by others in making decisions.
This position is located within the Nevada Department of Transportation's (NDOTs) Location/Survey Section in Las Vegas. The selected applicant will be responsible for directing, supervising, and assisting technicians in monument searches using Plats, Record of Surveys, LoIS documents, maps, BLM field notes, and any other pertinent documentation. Incumbent will supervise technical staff and participate in survey activities; provide ground control for aerial survey projects by setting control points for photogrammetric mapping in suitable positions as pre-defined in project planning; determine horizontal position of control points for aerial mapping and/or future control by measuring angles, distances, or Global Position System vectors; determine vertical position of control points for aerial mapping and future control by use of precise 3-wire leveling methods; and provide written descriptions of found or set points and their location for later use; survey boundaries by determining the position of existing property corners for establishing boundaries by tying them into known survey control, staking corners of new or existing boundaries for right-of-way acquisition or location identification; perform conventional location surveys by cross-sectioning rivers, highways, and ditches to determine elevation, grade rates, and flow; locate and record positions of ground features such as fences, roads, flow lines, and buildings for roadway design; and stake alignment for base line for cross-sections/topographic detail. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field; OR certified as an Engineering Intern and four years of subprofessional engineering experience; OR four years of experience at the Engineering Technician II level or above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    This position will require working variable shifts and days at the discretion of the appointing authority.
    Employees in this class who are not licensed professional engineers may not represent themselves as such to other persons or entities.
    The ability to travel at least 50% of the time is required.

    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
