The Position
Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
This position is located within the Department of Agriculture, Plant Industry Division, Environmental Services in Sparks, NV. The Environmental Scientist 4 acts as the program manager for the Environmental Services Program within the Plant Industry Division which includes supervision of the Environmental Scientist 2 and Agriculturalist 3. This position is responsible for working with Environmental Protection Agency on cooperative projects while maintaining both state and federal work programs and budgets. The incumbent must maintain the Restricted Use Pesticide certification program by educating and training the industry and acts as the lead for assigning investigations, responding to verified complaints, and coordinating enforcement actions. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and four years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research, planning, and technical support; OR eighteen months of experience as an Environmental Scientist III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
The Examination
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST 4 (10.545) Training and Experience Exam
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

1) Describe your experience dealing with complex and sensitive issues with: 1) the public; 2) local governments; and/or 3) other regulatory agencies.
2) Describe your experience in the following areas: 1) developing presentations; and 2) public speaking.
3) Describe your experience, including the number of years, writing reports on mitigation and technical issues.
4) Describe your experience in fiscal management in the following areas: 1) budget preparation and tracking; 2) contract management; and/or 3) grant management.
5) Describe your experience in the following areas: 1) supervision; 2) lead work; and/or 3) contract staff oversight.
6) Describe your experience in environmental project/program development, implementation and coordination.
