The Position
Therapeutic Recreation Specialists perform initial and periodic assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic services to assist individuals in correctional institutions, rehabilitation programs, long-term care facilities, residential facilities, mental health facilities and facilities for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to improve their mental and physical health and/or social functioning.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
The Nevada Department of Veterans Services, Nevada State Veterans Home located in Boulder City, Nevada is recruiting for a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist II. This supervisory position is responsible to plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the overall operation of the Activity Department in accordance with current federal, state, & local standards, guidelines & regulations, and our established policies and procedures. The primary goal and responsibility is to assure that an on-going program of activities is designed to meet the interests and the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of each resident, in accordance with the comprehensive assessment. The incumbent will plan, complete and implement the Home's Activity Calendar which includes but is not limited to: daily neighborhood activity programs, socials, special events, and community outings based on residents' needs, strengths, concerns, likes and dislikes. The incumbent will keep abreast of current federal & state regulations, as well as professional standards; attend department head meetings; assist the Quality Assessment & Performance Improvement Committee in developing and implementing appropriate plans of action to correct identified deficiencies; and other related duties. The Nevada State Veterans Home requires this position have one of the following certifications: 1) National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC), or; 2) National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP) at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. The incumbent may be required to work a variable schedule on occasion to meet the needs of the Activity Department. A TB test and Physical will be required of the selected applicant.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in therapeutic recreation, recreation, or specialty area such as art, dance, music or physical education and one year of full-time professional experience coordinating and providing recreation therapy in a clinical, residential, or community-based organization; OR certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) and one year of full-time experience described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
Additional Position Criteria
    Current National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) or Certification through the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP) is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
