The Position
Conservation Staff Specialists assist in developing, formulating, and coordinating programs, policies and procedures related to areas such as resource management, safety and training, fire management and policy management pertinent to the assigned area of natural resource management, preservation, conservation and protection.
Under general supervision, Conservation Staff Specialist I's, on a regional basis, develop, formulate, and coordinate programs, policies and procedures related to the assigned area of natural resource management, preservation, conservation and protection.
The incumbent assists the Park Supervisor in the management of all units within the Walker River State Recreation Area. These units include the Pitchfork, Rafter Seven, Flying M and Nine Mile ranches. The incumbent supervises seasonal staff as assigned, manages a wide variety of natural and historical resources, and performs field and administrative duties including completion of routine and special reports. This position works various hours and shifts and in a variety of weather conditions. The candidate must provide science-based land management and administrative expertise to ensure proper monitoring and restoration of former agricultural fields, stream/riparian areas, including vegetative management and erosion mitigation, in a variety of habitats. The incumbent will assist the Park Supervisor manage grazing leases on both State and Federal lands. Knowledge of GIS systems and their applications are required. The Conservation Staff Specialist I must make decisions regarding resources, training, equipment and materials as it applies to natural resource and recreation management. The position also provides guidance and development to assigned staff. The Conservation Specialist I works with staff, other agencies and private individuals and organizations to develop solutions to a wide variety of environmental, recreation and management issues on the East Walker River. The incumbent will conduct tours and make presentations to the public, stakeholders and other agency staff. The Park headquarters is located approximately 10 miles from Yerington, NV. In order to receive consideration applicants must indicate their ability to work in this geographical location.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, ecology, natural resource management, forestry, parks management, fire management or related field and two years of professional experience in a relevant resource management field that included assisting in developing, formulating, and coordinating programs, policies and procedures; coordinating special grant programs and/or contracts; and coordinating training programs; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    May be required to work varying hours and shifts including holidays, weekends and evenings.

    Requires a valid driver's license at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
