Criminal Investigators perform criminal investigations involving violations of federal and/or State law. The investigative process is initiated following a formal request for services or as a coordinated effort with federal, State, or local law enforcement and criminal justice agencies. Criminal Investigators utilize standard investigative and law enforcement techniques.

Incumbents are assigned responsibility for investigative assignments or functions for the Nevada Secretary of State, Securities Division. Incumbents investigate violations of state securities laws and other areas of law that fall within the Secretary of State's responsibility. Work is reviewed through case reports, activity reports, meetings and as the need arises. Assignments are performed independently and collaboratively with other peace officers. Investigators conduct interviews with individuals, witnesses, suspects and criminal justice agency officials, and other sources to obtain information regarding the criminal investigation; gather and preserve evidence; execute search warrants; take photographs; document information; and transport, secure, and analyze evidence by following proper evidentiary procedure. Investigators develop case files, maintain case logs and reports; establish patterns and trends; and determine motives that support enforcement actions. In addition, investigators will perform surveillance and/or covert activities to gather evidence, develop leads, and establish probable cause. Investigators prepare, obtain, and execute legal documents such as affidavits, search warrants, arrest warrants, and subpoenas in support of the criminal justice process and criminal prosecution; and prepare detailed investigative reports of the investigative process in a chronological order to include: violations committed, documented evidence, witness statements and provide testimony in a court of law. Although bilingual skills in Spanish are not required, they are desirable.
