The Position
Veterans Service Officers advise and advocate for veterans and individuals currently serving in the United States armed forces who are State residents, their spouses, widows, widowers, children, dependents, estate and personal representatives; prepare, submit and present claims and appeals for denied benefits including adjusted compensation, hospitalization, insurance, pension, disability compensation, vocational training, education or rehabilitation; provide assistance and advice to resolve problems and answer questions relating to available benefits under federal and State laws.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
The Nevada Department of Veterans Services is recruiting for the position of Veterans Services Representative 1. The position is geographically located at the Southern Nevada Veterans Home in Boulder City, Nevada three days per week and at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in North Las Vegas two days per week. Primary responsibility is to advise and advocate for veterans and individuals currently serving in the United States armed forces who are Nevada State residents, their spouses, widows, widowers, children, dependents, estate and personal representatives. This position is responsible for researching federal statutes, laws, and regulations pertaining to benefits and claims by military veterans and dependents; interviewing veterans or dependents to prepare for filing claims; reviewing veterans' medical records to obtain evidential support for claims; compiling information from various medical sources; and preparing and filing veterans claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The position provides service as a veterans advocate at varying levels of claims and appeals procedures with the VA; represents veterans at VA boards and hearings; performs outreach to inform and assist veterans and the community in obtaining benefits; maintains and protects client confidentiality of medical records; and possess knowledge of the Veterans Health Administration system. Travel up to 50% of the time is required. Successful completion of extensive training programs is required following appointment to the position. Applicants with veteran services case management and interviewing experience to include determining benefits and processing veterans' claims and appeals may receive preference. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in general studies, social science, English or related field and three years of experience which included interviewing clients to elicit and impart information; researching and locating information from a variety of sources; writing narrative reports and summaries; interpreting and applying rules and regulations; and evaluating complex information and making determinations; OR an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in general studies or related area and two years of experience as described above in a program directly related to providing Veterans services; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    This position requires a pre-employment background investigation as a condition of employment.
    The ability to travel at least 50% of the time is required.

    A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
