Therapeutic Recreation Specialists perform initial and periodic assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic services to assist individuals in correctional institutions, rehabilitation programs, long-term care facilities, residential facilities, mental health facilities and facilities for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to improve their mental and physical health and/or social functioning.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist I position is located at Dini-Townsend hospital within Northern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services (NNAMHS) in Sparks, NV. This position functions as an important part of a multi-disciplinary treatment team providing clinical services to adults with acute mental health issues in an inpatient setting. The ideal candidate will have the ability to provide a full spectrum of recreation services including therapeutic gardening, ceramics/pottery, recovery classes, leisure education, fitness awareness and expressive arts.
The Sparks area is known for the availability of numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation, including skiing at Lake Tahoe, hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, mountain biking, rafting on the Truckee River, and numerous special events such as Artown and Hot August Nights. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in therapeutic recreation, recreation, or specialty area, such as art, dance, music or physical education and one year of full-time technical experience in recreation therapy in a clinical, residential, or community-based organization; OR certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

Certification through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification as required by the agency for accreditation by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospitals or other accrediting body is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. |

A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. |

A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. |

A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
