Biologists conduct fisheries, wildlife and/or habitat management projects and research studies including data collection, analysis and interpretation; develop and implement project proposals and work plans; prepare recommendations; and participate in public relations activities.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This position works within the Department of Agriculture and is located in Elko, NV. Under the supervision of the State Veterinarian the incumbent will coordinate with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, Wildlife Services, livestock producers and the state disease laboratory on predatory animal programs and wildlife habitat management studies. Duties to include collecting and analyzing wildlife, land, water and resource use survey data to help the department and implement land and predator management plans; field investigations addressing habitat and land use practices associated with predatory work; maintain files on all predatory animal work including, but not limited to federal NEPA and clearance documentation, original projects design, work & costs, maintenance work & cost, and long-term trends and results; track, document and prepare reports and summaries of field activities and program accomplishments; and plan, budget, coordinate and participate in surveys and inspections associated with determining new and ongoing projects. Additional duties include working closely with the State Veterinarian on collecting and analyzing disease outbreaks in all animal species. The collection of samples include, but are not limited to, post mortem sample collection. This position will be required to travel and work in remote areas at project sites throughout Nevada and in some situations, spend up to five consecutive days.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, wildlife management or closely related field and three years of professional wildlife management experience such as conducting research studies including data collection, analysis and interpretation; development and implementation of project proposals for fisheries, wildlife and/or habitat management projects; OR two years of experience as a Biologist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

Work may be performed under adverse weather conditions and include extensive walking under difficult conditions in remote and/or primitive locations. |

Working on occasional nights and/or weekends may be required. |

Specialized experience may be required and will be identified at the time of recruitment. |

Statewide travel and outdoor work is required. |

A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. |
