Professional Engineering Specialists are experienced Professional Engineers (P.E.) who have detailed and in-depth knowledge and expertise that enables them to develop solutions to complex atypical design and/or construction challenges; advise management, engineering professionals and technical staff division/department wide on contract interpretation, conceptual design alternatives analyses, code interpretation, and specialized research and analysis related to best methods, materials and practices. The preponderance of duties and responsibilities of positions in this class is providing technical expertise for project development, specialized systems and/or functions and advanced research, analysis and problem solving in specialized areas of highway maintenance and construction. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
The position is located in Reno but may be relocated to Carson city at the discretion of the Department. The Professional Engineer Specialist will work with employees in the NDOT Materials Division and at UNR to prepare and test research and field samples. Duties will also include collecting samples in the field and collecting and analyzing test data. This position is responsible for conducting and managing ongoing NDOT bituminous materials research projects both in laboratory and field settings; coordinating with Western Regional Superpave Center at UNR on collaborative NDOT research projects; supervising Bituminous Operations staff; performing advanced analysis requiring in-depth understanding of theoretical concepts, bituminous materials characterization, and engineering processes; preparation of final research reports and related documentation; accompanying Roadbed Design and other Materials Division Sections to implement the mandated Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG); participating in national and regional meetings and workshops.

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a civil engineering field such as geotechnical, structural, transportation or construction engineering, and licensure as a Professional Engineer which included practical experience relevant to the assignment; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering, completion of 12 units of graduate level coursework relevant to the assignment, licensure as a Professional Engineer, and one year of professional post-licensure civil engineering experience.
Any person that is a licensed Professional Engineer in another state must become licensed as a Professional Engineer in Nevada within six months of appointment as a condition of employment.
Positions may require specialize education and experience which will be identified at the time of recruitment.
