The Position
Curators perform a broad range of professional and technical museum work involving, but not limited to, assessment, evaluation, survey, inventory, preservation, research, education and planning for a specific collection and/or program area within a museum.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
This position works within the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Division of Museums and History, Nevada Historical Society and is located in Reno, NV. The Curator of Education and Public Programs will work in conjunction with Nevada Historical Society (NHS) staff, docents, volunteers and community members to manage and develop NHS' education and public programs. Job duties for this position include planning, developing, and managing education programs which encompasses guided tours, school tours and workshops, lecture series, special events, and outreach to schools and community organizations. The Curator 2 is also tasked with supervising, recruiting, and training interns, docents and volunteers. Additional responsibilities include overseeing the publication of the Nevada Historical Society Quarterly and newsletters, working with other curators on exhibit planning and development, preparing marketing materials and advertisements, and assisting in the cultivation of partnerships with other cultural organizations, agencies, community organizations, and businesses for resource development. Working weekends, holidays and some evenings will be required of this position.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in history, prehistory, natural history, museum studies, education, or closely related field plus two years of professional experience in a museum. This experience must have included experience in exhibit development, and collections registration, and/or developing, promoting, executing and evaluating educational programming; OR one year of experience as a Curator I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    Statewide travel is required.
Additional Position Criteria
    Experience teaching and developing teaching curriculum and strategic plans for educational programs is required.
    Experience with providing content and/or organizing scholarly and professional publications is required.
