Therapeutic Recreation Specialists perform initial and periodic assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic services to assist individuals in correctional institutions, rehabilitation programs, long-term care facilities, residential facilities, mental health facilities and facilities for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to improve their mental and physical health and/or social functioning.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This position supports Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services (SNAMHS) and is in the Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital. Incumbent interviews patients to assess recreational interests and physical, mental and/or emotional limitations; reviews medical records and confers with medical personnel regarding physical disabilities, injuries or other medical conditions; evaluates individual needs and strengths; and prepares treatment plans and documents prescribed therapeutic activities within the constraints of available resources, facilities and security requirements. The incumbent will also plan, organize, and implement a wide variety of therapeutic activities including fitness, wellness, leisure education, social skills, art, and music; modify and adapt equipment to accommodate special needs; and schedule and conduct individual and group therapy sessions. This is a full time position and incumbent will be working an innovative variable schedule with overtime after 40 hours per week. This position requires completion of respirator fit testing, completion of Certification in Conflict Prevention and Response Training and CPR certification which can be obtained on the job. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in therapeutic recreation, recreation, or specialty area, such as art, dance, music or physical education and one year of full-time technical experience in recreation therapy in a clinical, residential, or community-based organization; OR certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. |

A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. |
