The Position
Group Supervisors perform duties involving the education, employment, training, treatment, care and custody of juvenile offenders residing within a State Youth Training Center; maintain comprehensive records of assigned youths' program activities; and provide individual guidance pursuant to State or federal laws and regulations.
The Nevada DIVISION OF CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES (DCFS) is recruiting for a Group Supervisor 4 position at the Caliente Youth Center (CYC) a 140-bed staff secure facility for male and female youth age 12 to 18. Caliente is home to some of the most beautiful country in Nevada! This includes the magnificent Rainbow Canyon and the oasis-like setting of Kershaw-Ryan State Park just 2 miles south of the city center. Within 50 miles of the town are four other Nevada state parks: Beaver Dam, Cathedral Gorge, Spring Valley, and Echo Canyon. Caliente is a short distance, approximately 2 hours north, from the bright lights of Las Vegas, NV. The CYC goal is to promote positive self-growth, create change in behavior, attitudes, values and ways of thinking for youth. Group Supervisor III's perform duties involving the education, employment, training, treatment, care and custody of juveniles within a State Youth Training Center; maintain comprehensive records of assigned youths' program activities; and provide individual guidance as stipulated in State laws and regulations. Under limited supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties in the series concept and participate as a member of a treatment team by assisting in the formulation and evaluation of a treatment plan and making recommendations on alternative treatment methods. Additionally, Group Supervisor III's coordinate and oversees group and individual treatment sessions; develop session goals, rules and content using prescribed methods; document group and individual treatment and activities; and prepare individual progress summary reports for review by the treatment team, committing judge, parole officer, legal guardian, and institutional staff.
These are full time positions that include a variable work agreement that may be scheduled to work hours and days different than 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday such as swing shift and weekends. The State of Nevada and DCFS offer an excellent benefits package that includes health, dental and vision insurance, participation in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), accrual of 15 days of annual and 15 days of sick leave, 11 paid holidays and no city, county, state or social security tax!

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, social work, sociology, counseling and guidance, human services, social services, education, criminal justice or closely related field and two years of experience working with youth in a custodial, employment program, therapeutic, educational, recreational program or correctional setting with responsibility for performing vocational assessments, making oral presentations during group sessions and treatment team meetings, and providing vocational and life skills training to juvenile offenders; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and four years of experience as described above; OR one year as a Group Supervisor III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must first submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    Pursuant to NRS 62B.270 and the Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act, applicants must submit to a criminal and child abuse background check and said background must be clear of any disqualifying offenses.
    A valid driver's license is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Per NAC 284.317, applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
    As a condition of appointment and continuing employment, positions are subject to call-back, overtime on short notice, stand-by status, and may require work on evenings, weekends, or holidays.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).
GROUP SUPERVISOR 4 (12.535) Training and Experience Exam
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

Qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
1) Describe your experience, including number of years, planning, developing, or implementing activities and events in one or all of the following juvenile correctional, education, or social setting environment: a) Worked in an educational/social environment; b) Worked in a juvenile corrections environment; c) Worked in a juvenile corrections environment with a substantial recreational and educational component environment for four or the last five years.
2) Describe your experience, including number of years, supervising and coordinating staff assignments for the following correctional, educational, or professional staff: a) Supervised either a corrections, educational and/or professional staff; b) supervised corrections staff in the last five years; c) Supervised a combination of corrections and professional staff in the last five years. Be sure to include titles and numbers of staff supervised and that this information corresponds with documentation in your application.
3) Describe your experience, including number of years, of your involvement with evaluating programs and/or the performance of subordinate workers: a) completed performance evaluations for subordinate staff; b) completed performance evaluations of staff in a corrections or educational environment; c) formal program evaluations in the form of quality improvement for a minimum of two years. Be sure to detail your experience.
4) Describe your experience initiating and implementing policies and procedures, or other innovations to the operations of an institution that involves security, safety and custody: a) policy had minor impact on the institution (i.e., internal processes/procedures); b) policies impacted a segment or portion of an institution in the areas of safety, security or custody (i.e., cottage, unit, or section); c) policies impacted an institution's security and custody procedures (i.e., whole facility). Be sure to detail your experience.
5) Please list all current certifications you hold or associations of which you are a member that are related to this position. You must attach copies of all current certificates and memberships to receive credit for your response.
6) Describe your level of education related to this position as either a) high school diploma with training in criminal justice or sociology, b) Associates Degree in criminal justice, psychology or secondary education, or c) Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, psychology, or secondary education. Make sure your description is supported by documentation in your application.
