The Position
A Metrologist performs activities and processes involved in the effective operation of the Nevada Measurement Standards Laboratory; calibrates measures of mass, length and volume against the official State standards; and ensures that the Laboratory remains certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in order to provide standard calibration services traceable to the U.S. national standards for industry, government agencies, educational institutions, business and research facilities.
This position is located at the Sparks office of the Consumer Equitability Division, within the Department of Agriculture and will be underfilling for a Metrologist 2. Automatic progression may occur upon the supervisor's approval and when minimum qualifications of the higher level have been met. The incumbent will test devices used for weighing and measuring from State, federal and private agencies; receive and prepare devices to be tested; and determine equipment suitability. The incumbent will also advise commercial, industrial, institutional and government users of measurement standards on technical requirements pertaining to measuring systems, standards and test instrumentation; inspect, clean and maintain field equipment; and prepare reports of metrology findings. In addition, the position will participate in national laboratory auditing programs, proficiency testing, and regional measurement assurance programs. The incumbent must take and pass the proficiency examination given by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a condition of employment and must obtain recognition as an authorized signatory from NIST within one year of appointment, dependent on class schedules, funding available for training, and evaluation of on-the-job training conducted by the Metrologist 3. In order to obtain NIST recognition, the incumbent must be able to meet all requirements which include successful completion of proficiency testing and specific training courses. Preference will be given to incumbents who have Echelon I or Echelon II Level Recognition from NIST. The incumbent must be able to routinely and repetitively lift up to 50 pounds. This position also has a travel requirement of up to 50%. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and 12 credits of post-secondary education in science, mathematics, statistics, physics or engineering and one year of work experience in the operation, inspection, maintenance or installation of weighting and measuring instruments; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Incumbents at the Metrologist I level must obtain certification from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) within one year of appointment or as certification courses become available.
Special Requirements
    At the Metrologist I level, applicants must take and pass the proficiency examination given by the National Institute of Standards and Technology as a condition of employment.
