The Position
Highway Equipment Mechanic Supervisor's organize, control and direct the operation and staff of a major maintenance station equipment shop or the Equipment Division's headquarters equipment shop.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
This position is located within District I, Las Vegas. Incumbent supervises equipment shop personnel including mechanics, skilled craft workers, semi-skilled personnel, and support staff. Duties include establishing equipment preventive maintenance and repair priorities; performing shop and equipment inspections; prioritizing equipment for replacement and providing equipment specification recommendations; monitoring shop operation and personnel services budgets; managing collection, storage, and disposal of shop and equipment chemicals and waste; and ensuring accuracy of data entry into the Nevada Department of Transportation's (NDOT's) equipment management system. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program and four years of journey level experience in repairing and rebuilding a variety of equipment components including engines, cooling systems, transmissions and converters, drive trains, differentials, brake systems and steering systems. Two of the four years of experience must have been in a leadworker or supervisory capacity; OR two years of experience as a Highway Equipment Mechanic II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
    A valid Nevada Class A or B driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law required random testing for controlled substances during employment.

The Examination
HIGHWAY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC SUPERVISOR 1 (09.315) Training and Experience Exam
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

Qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
1) Describe your experience, including number of years, supervising personnel in a heavy equipment repair shop to include the preparation of performance evaluations, payroll approval, leave approval, disciplinary action, and interviewing and hiring.
2) Describe your experience utilizing an Equipment Management Database System for capturing data associated with a fleet operation at a supervisory or equivalent level. Include what information was entered into this system, how it was entered, and the number of years utilizing the database.
3) Describe your experience, including number of years, in determining annual financial expectations for a heavy duty equipment repair shop and providing a budget request to upper management.
4) Describe your formal training and working experience utilizing Microsoft Office Word and Excel. Include the number of years utilizing each of these programs.
5) Describe your formal training in heavy equipment repair; OR describe your experience as a Nevada Department of Transportation Mechanic-in-Training. Include the number of years of formal training OR the number of years as a NDOT Mechanic-in-Training.
6) Describe your heavy duty mechanic journeyman experience. Include the number of years working on heavy equipment.
