The Position
Park Interpreters plan, organize, provide and supervise a variety of interpretive facilities, services and activities and assist in the operation and maintenance of an assigned State park.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
This position is located at Mormon Station State Historic Park in the town of Genoa, Nevada. Mormon Station is a well-known historic site that is also a popular location for photography, picnicking and wildlife viewing. The Park has significant historical, cultural, natural and scenic resources. Candidates work under the general supervision of the Park Supervisor located 30 miles away at Washoe Lake State Park. Duties include all aspects of park operations including visitor services, interpretation, custodial services, buildings and grounds maintenance, fee collection, museum operations, and volunteer management. This position is responsible for developing, preparing and implementing interpretive programs and tours as well as managing and curating historic items and structures at an historic site. The position is responsible for designing and creating brochures, interpretive signage, exhibits, audiovisual programs, and online media presence. The position recruits, trains and supervises park volunteers and subordinate seasonal staff. This position is responsible for submitting monthly and assigned reports, group area reservations, providing emergency medical assistance, informs public of park rules and regulations, and ensures compliance with park rules and procedures. This position requires the use of general office equipment, four wheel drive vehicles, light maintenance equipment and basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PastPerfect Museum Software. Social media management and photography are important skills for this position. Park Interpreters are required to work variable hours and shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays; be available to work special events and may have to respond to callouts or emergencies. Some statewide travel will be required. Park housing is not available at this location.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major or minor in park management, outdoor recreation management, history/folklore, education, ecology, forestry, biology, agriculture, natural or environmental sciences, horticulture, wildlife management, museum management, business or public administration or related field and one year of professional park experience which included developing, managing and presenting interpretive and/or educational activities; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this class have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this class must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
