The Position
DPS Lieutenants are responsible for the operations and administrative functions of an assigned work unit to include overseeing law enforcement activities, services and programs within an assigned division of the Department of Public Safety (DPS); reviewing and approving reports and investigations; observing field work; coordinating staff training; managing special programs, and ensuring recordkeeping practices follow established policy and procedure. This class represents the first management level within the department and assignments are characterized by program management, budget administration, and development of goals, objectives, and performance measures. Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives.
THE RECRUITMENT IS TO FILL FUTURE VACANCIES THAT MAY OCCUR STATEWIDE IN ALL DIVISIONS. The Oral Board examinations will be scheduled 11/7, 11/8 and 11/9. Attach copies of documents requested on the Training and Evaluation Section. The deadline for the documents is 11/1. The Training and Experience Rating Plan examination will evaluate your specific education and experience as it relates to performing the duties of DPS Lieutenant. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of supervisory law enforcement experience equivalent to a DPS Sergeant in Nevada State service; OR two years of experience as a DPS Sergeant in Nevada State service.
Special Notes
    Applicants must meet minimum standards for appointment as a peace officer as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Incumbent must pass the Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment.
Special Requirements
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    Statewide travel is required.
    This position is subject to call-out or call-back.
    A valid Nevada Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).
DPS LIEUTENANT (13.204) Oral Exam
This is a 2-part exam consisting of a Training & Experience-50% and an Oral Exam-50%. Qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
Areas of special attention on the oral board examination are working knowledge of principles and practices of management and supervision; federal and state laws and regulations and department procedures pertinent to the assignment. Ability to: establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other law enforcement agencies, government officials, the judicial system, the general public and the community; analyze, evaluate and present data and statistics related to work and program activities; communicate effectively both orally and in writing to prepare and present oral and written reports as needed for establishing program goals and objectives, operating policy and procedures; manage multiple programs; interpret and apply laws and regulations to administer assigned program areas; effectively supervise personnel, disseminate division policy and procedure.
DPS LIEUTENANT (13.204) Training and Experience
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 50%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

Qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
1) Do you have college credits or an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree in Criminal Justice, Organizational Management, Business Administration, Public Administration or related field? If so please list the degrees or course work you have completed. You may also attach diplomas or transcripts. (Note: You must have a minimum of 60 credits to receive points for an Associates Degree.)
2) Do you have a valid Intermediate or Advanced (no equivalency) POST Certification? If yes, please attach the appropriate certificate for verification.
3) Please describe your experience supervising law enforcement personnel. Include in your answer the employer and the dates you obtained this experience at the Sergeant level or above. Also include in your answer experience supervising non-sworn law enforcement personnel at the Sergeant level or above.
4) Have you attended a verbal or written communication class, seminar, workshop or Toastmaster membership? If yes, list them with the dates of attendance.
5) Have you successfully completed a POST approved Instructor Development Class and/or passed a DPS approved certified instructor training course (e.g., Defensive Tactics, firearms instructor, Taser, DTFI, DEA lab Certification, Cultural Diversity, Domestic Violence, Bloodborne pathogens, etc)? If yes, please attach the certificate or list them here with dates.
6) Please describe any experience working with specialized units such as Sex Offenders, House Arrest, Rural Operations, ICE/K-9, Urban Traffic, Gang Unit, Interstate Compact Unit, OPR Administrative Investigations, Homeland Security Investigation, OCDETF Cases, Intensive Supervision Unit, Major Crime Investigation, Narcotic Task Force, and etc.? Include in your answer the employer, the division and dates you served in that unit. You must have performed the specialized duty for 1 year to get credit.
