The Position
Parole & Probation Specialists perform technical duties in administrative functions and units, which do not require peace officer status. Duties include casework services, investigations, tracking and monitoring assigned parolees and probationers, pre-sentence investigations, determination of restitution and supervision fees, and referral services for the assigned unit. Positions in this series obtain and verify information; prepare and process case files and recommend appropriate action; and monitor offender activities. Incumbents are not Peace Officer's Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified and do not perform law enforcement functions such as conducting field inspections of offenders' worksite or residence, conducting surveillance, searches and arrests, or transporting prisoners to court or detention facilities.
The Department of Public Safety and the Division of Parole & Probation is currently seeking applicants with a passion to make a difference in Nevadan's lives. We are currently recruiting for Parole & Probation Specialists in Fallon, Nevada. Parole & Probation Specialist III's prepare pre-sentencing reports and recommendations at the fully trained level in the Court Services Unit, or serve as lead-worker to other specialists in the Interstate Compact or Pre-Release Unit. This position is responsible for preparing Pre-Sentence Investigation Reports for the court prior to sentencing of an individual that has been convicted of a crime. Duties include researching and preparing criminal histories by interviewing convicted offenders to collect their social history. These interviews can occur in an office setting, via telephone, video conference, at the local jail or prison. Duties also include preparing a multi-page report including a narrative of the offense(s), and making sentence recommendations to the judge by applying the appropriate statutory regulations to the offense(s). Some positions will be required to write reports for the Attorney General regarding criminal matters that prison inmates committed. The successful candidate will need superior written communication skills, including grammar, sentence structure, punctuation and spelling with minimal corrections required.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, social or behavioral sciences, human or social services, public or business administration, liberal arts, or related field and one year of experience making eligibility determinations, researching and verifying information, maintaining case records, performing casework services in a law enforcement, social or behavioral services environment; OR graduation from high school and five years of progressively responsible administrative or technical program support experience, three years of which included making eligibility determinations, researching and verifying information, maintaining case records, performing casework services in a law enforcement, social or behavioral services environment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Parole & Probation Specialist II in Nevada State service.
Special Notes
    Education above the high school level in criminal justice, law enforcement, social or human services, social or behavioral sciences, public administration or business administration, liberal arts, or related field may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
