The Position
Forensic Specialists perform a combination of security and client care duties in a secure mental health facility for treatment/evaluation of the mentally and/or medically ill offender and/or offenders whose competency requires evaluation.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
Forensic Specialist IVs perform a combination of security and clinical related work in a high security mental health facility for the treatment of the mentally disordered offenders. A Forensic Specialist IV also supervises a group of subordinate Forensic Specialist by providing training, assigning and reviewing work, preparing performance evaluations and recommending various types of personnel actions and perform other duties as assigned.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and four years of paraprofessional mental health or closely related experience, three years of which must have been in an institutional setting for individuals with mental illness providing care, treatment, supervision and training for clients. In addition, applicants must have attained and maintained valid certification as required by statute and regulation; OR four years of experience which included one year as a Forensic Specialist III in Nevada State service and valid certification as required by statute and regulation; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicants must meet current Peace Officers' Standards and Training (POST) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Some positions require incumbents to obtain and maintain certification as a mental health technician per NRS 433.279 as a condition of continuing employment.
Special Requirements
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
    This position is subject to call-out or call-back.
    Working weekends and/or holidays is required.
    Applicants must successfully complete a pre-employment physical and be free of active tuberculosis.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
The Examination
FORENSIC SPECIALIST 4 - OPTION A: MENTAL HEALTH (13.321A) Training and Experience Exam
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.
