The Position
Correctional Officers maintain and supervise offenders in State correctional facilities in a controlled humane environment. This position may be at a Maximum-Security Prison.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
Lake's Crossing Center is recruiting for a Senior Correctional Officer. The position performs a combination of security and clinical related work in a maximum security mental health facility for the treatment of the mentally disordered offenders. Duties include checking-in out-patient clients; conducting in-patient clients' med calls; handling, organizing and maintaining property; acting as main officer in all clients' related transports; conducting in-house training on control room operation; appropriate use of force, mechanical restraints, restraint chair operation, and four point restraint; working with clients and participating in Treatment Teams; and operating control room for 2 hours a day to develop control room expertise and efficiency. Additionally, the position will conduct applicants backgrounds investigations, run the building for a week once a month by supervising Forensic Staffs, assigning and reviewing their work; run the building in the absence of Forensic Supervisors; and perform other duties as assigned to include special projects assigned by the Lieutenant or the Agency Director. The position will work Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm. This position is subject to call-out or call-back. The environment requires a high level of security awareness as well as the physical stamina or ability to deal with maladaptive and aggressive clients. Certification as a mental health technician is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    One year of journey level experience as a correctional officer in an adult correctional institution which included certification as a peace officer under P.O.S.T. or its equivalent; OR one year of experience as a Correctional Officer in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards Training (POST-Category 3) requirements including the physical agility testing as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Current departmental staff will not be required to go through a background check, fingerprinting or the prescreeing for controlled substances.
    Applicants must pass a strict annual physical examination in accordance with Nevada State Prisons Standards and to meet requirements of the provisions of the Heart/Lung Bills.
    An Associate's Degree in corrections, criminal justice, or a closely related field may be substituted for six months of the required journey level experience.
Special Requirements
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
Additional Position Criteria
    Certification as a mental health technician is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
