JOB INFORMATION

Tax Examiners are responsible for licensing/registration, collecting taxes and fees, and assisting taxpayers to ensure compliance with the applicable tax and registration statutes.
This position is with the Department's Motor Carrier Division at our Carson City office, located at 555 Wright Way. This Division is responsible for ensuring compliance with Nevada's Fuel Tax laws for special fuel users and motor fuel suppliers in an effort to collect and distribute the maximum tax revenue. Additionally, the Motor Carrier Division is responsible for the registration of all commercial vehicles, conducting audits of interstate commercial registrant motor carriers; fuel users; and fuel suppliers, and complying with the International Registration Plan (IRP) and the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA).
The Motor Carrier Division is responsible for the regulation of motor carriers and the fuel industry through customer service and education and the equitable administration of Nevada's laws to ensure compliance. The Tax Examiner is responsible for assisting commercial motor vehicle carriers with special fuel tax returns by applying the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) rules, the International Registration Plan (IRP), and Federal Motor Carrier regulations. This position assists motor carriers with licensing/annual renewal application requirements. This position reviews and approves documents submitted for fuel usage refunds and exemptions; registration and titling of commercial vehicles; verifying for accuracy, calculating and processing special fuel/IFTA tax and tax refunds; the ability to correctly calculate and collect penalties, interest, fines and sanctions associated with delinquent payments and delinquent filing requirements. The Tax Examiner establishes and maintains strong working relationships with their out of state counterparts, and representatives of state agencies and local municipalities as well as other agency staff members. The Tax Examiner must possess good oral and written communication skills and will use these skills to make oral presentations and prepare written documents and reports as necessary.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university and one year experience in clerical accounting, collections, or the interpretation and application of policies, regulations and/or legal requirements equivalent to an Administrative Assistant II or Accounting Assistant II in Nevada State service; OR Graduation from High School or equivalent education and two years of experience as stated above.

A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
Requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
