Safety Specialists promote recognized safety practices among businesses covered by State and federal safety
and health laws and regulations. Incumbents identify or train others to identify safety and health hazards and
violations, and recommend reasonable and feasible means of abatement; research specific technology and
industry applications using technical references and applicable codes and standards; prepare written reports
and/or training materials; make public presentations to promote knowledge of safety issues among the public
and industry groups; and maintain current knowledge of new technologies, standards, codes, rules and
regulations. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
The Safety Specialist for Mine Safety and Health will be working for the Department of Business and Industry in the Industrial Relations Division in either Winnemucca or Elko. The incumbent will conduct safety and health inspections at mines, both above ground and underground, mills, quarries, and related facilities; investigate mine accidents; conduct/provide training to mine employees, and provide technical assistance and consultation to mine operators. Incumbents may be required to use personal vehicle to conduct State business. Working shifts other than 8:00am to 5:00pm may be required, to include weekends.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Five years of technical, operational, or management experience in mines, mills, beneficiation plants, or smelters, one year of which must have been spent working
underground.
Special Notes
The ability to travel at least 50% of the time is required.
This position may be required to work shifts other than 8:00am to 5:00pm, to include weekends.
This position may be required to be on Standby/Call back.
Special Requirements
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
The Examination

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.
