The Position
Legal Secretaries perform specialized secretarial duties for attorneys, administrative law judges, and/or hearings officers.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This position is located in our Las Vegas office within the Hearings Division. Using applicable statutes and administrative regulations, will determine if the department has jurisdiction for action taken. Duties will include: obtain thorough and appropriate information to process a hearing request; perform specialized secretarial duties for administrative law judges including preparing legal documents and correspondence; calendaring; maintaining records; provide assistance on routine problems and inquiries which are not of a legal nature; maintain current knowledge of assigned caseload and status of cases; provide general information to the public, State and local governments, attorneys, law enforcement officers/agencies and act as a liaison between those parties and assigned administrative law judge. The position will also provide clerical support to assigned administrative law judge and/or supervisory staff; receive and screen visitors; answer phones; greet parties appearing at hearings; open and review incoming mail and distribute appropriately; and process and file appropriate legal documents in accordance with the specific time frames and procedures as set out by statutes and regulations.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of clerical experience, two of which were performing progressively responsible legal secretarial work in a training capacity; OR one year of experience as a Legal Secretary I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    An Associate of Science degree with a legal secretarial emphasis is equivalent to one year of legal secretarial trainee experience.
    Completion of a legal secretarial diploma program from an accredited business college is equivalent to one year of legal secretarial trainee experience.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
The Examination
LEGAL SECRETARY II (02.153) Written Exam
The exam will consist of a written weighted 100%.
