The Position
Family Services Specialists assist families in achieving self-sufficiency; determine eligibility for a variety of public assistance and health related programs; and/or provide coordinated employment and training services including assessment, vocational guidance, support services, and education to clients; and/or provide child support enforcement services

The Division of Welfare and Supportive Services is recruiting for a vacancy in the Fallon District Office. Family Services Specialists interview clients, explain eligibility, and elicit information to determine which public assistance programs are applicable; assist clients in completing required applications; and research and verify information provided by clients in order to confirm citizenship, residency, household composition, current and previous earnings, and projected household expenses. Incumbents also evaluate and process information to establish eligibility, calculate income, and make determinations in accordance with program regulations, policies and procedures and within required timeframes. Under close supervision, positions in this series may specialize in one service area or may work in multiple areas as a generalist, depending upon the needs of the agency. This is the entry level in the series which provides for progression to the journey level upon satisfactory completion of the required training period, successfully meeting minimum qualifications, and with the recommendation of the appointing authority. The starting salary for newly hired state employees will be at the beginning of the pay range listed above. The State of Nevada offers a wide array of benefits to employees including paid holidays, annual and sick leave, health coverage, retirement, and many other additional options. Benefits include medical, dental, life and, disability insurance program; eleven paid holidays a year; three weeks of annual leave; three weeks of sick leave; State retirement system (PERS); and a tax sheltered deferred compensation plan is available. State employees do not contribute to Social Security, but a Medicare deduction is required.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience in a clerical/administrative/program support role which included customer relations; obtaining, verifying and evaluating information; organizing and prioritizing work in order to meet timelines and standards; applying and explaining program rules, regulations, policies and procedures; and performing mathematical computations; OR two years as an Administrative Assistant II in Nevada State service; OR sixty semester credits from an accredited college or university in general studies; business administration, social science or human services and one year of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    In accordance with NRS 293.5045, a voter registration agency shall not knowingly employ a person whose duties will include the registration of voters if they have been convicted of a felony involving theft or fraud. Most positions in this series fall under this NRS.
    For most positions in this series, applicants must meet the minimum typing speed established by the agency at the time of recruitment.
Special Requirements
    Candidates must submit to background checks and fingerprinting upon appointment.
Additional Position Experience
    Must type a minimum of 35 wpm accurately. A typing certificate issued within the last twelve (12) months must accompany your application and verify your net typing speed of at least 35 wpm in a five minute test. This typing certificate may be attained through any Nevada Job Connect office at no charge or through a staffing agency for a nominal fee. No online typing test will be accepted.
    Work experience with Microsoft Office Suite Programs such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, etc.
The Examination
PARAPROFESSIONAL/TECHNICAL EXAM
The exam will consist of a written weighted 100%.
