Legal Secretaries perform specialized secretarial duties for attorneys, administrative law judges, and/or hearings/appeals officers including preparing legal documents and correspondence; calendaring; maintaining records; and providing assistance on routine problems and inquiries which are not of a legal nature.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This position works for the Department of Business & Industry, within the Division of Insurance, Legal Section, in the Carson City office. Legal Secretaries perform specialized secretarial and support duties for attorneys, administrative law judges, and/or hearings officers. The incumbent will transcribe legal dictation by receiving assignment, determine court jurisdiction and format needed; review legal documents for proper grammar and citations, manage calendars, and deadlines; review, format, amend, file and notice regulations and proposed legislation. The incumbent will also monitor adoption, filing, and codification of all Division regulation. The incumbent must be able to read and apply court rules, provisions of the Nevada Revised Statutes, Nevada Administrative Code, and the legal precedents and guiding documents that enforce the laws and regulations of Title 57 of the Nevada Revised Statutes. Credentials for Notary Public are preferred but not required.

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of clerical experience, two of which were performing progressively responsible legal secretarial work in a training capacity; OR one year of experience as a Legal Secretary I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

An Associate of Science degree with a legal secretarial emphasis is equivalent to one year of legal secretarial trainee experience.

Completion of a legal secretarial diploma program from an accredited business college is equivalent to one year of legal secretarial trainee experience. |

The exam will consist of a written weighted 100%.
