The Position
Communications Systems Specialist's perform specialized electronic technician work involving the fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and modification of 24-hour communication systems such as two-way radio and microwave equipment, mountaintop base stations, towers and antennas.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. The purpose of the Communications Systems Specialist I position is to maintain the operational capability of the Nevada State Parks statewide 24-hour communication system by performing engineering, fabrication, installation, maintenance, modification, troubleshooting and repairs directly or through other agencies and contractors. Monitor and confirm all radio equipment operation is within FCC rules and regulations and meets the states standards. Maintain extensive statewide radio inventory. The agency's statewide 24-hour communication system consists of high level and low level radio repeater systems, vehicle based communication systems, structure based communication systems, and hand held portable radios. Manage all Federal Communications Commission Radio Station License activities to assure full compliance with FCC Rules and Regulations. The Communications Systems Specialist I also develops specific radio user programs based on the communications needs of each regions or parks geographical area; performs radio programming or arrange to have radios programmed with supplied programs; designs, updates and modifies existing programs to accommodate changes to Nevada State Parks. This position required occasional emergency response during non-working hours including holidays. Incumbents must submit proof of certification of competency as specified under Special Requirements within six months of employment in order to have the opportunity to progress to a Communications Systems Specialist II at a Grade 35 after one year.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Associate's degree or equivalent with course work in algebra, trigonometry, schematics and electronics laboratories and two years of technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic equipment; OR completion of trade school, military or college training to the certificate level in electronics technology which included theory of communication technology and two years of technical electronics experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Communications Systems Specialist I applicants must submit proof of certification of competency as specified above within six months of employment.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Some positions require extensive travel.
    A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at time of appointment and for continuing employment.
    Applicants must submit proof of certification of competency issued by one of the following: National Association of Radio Telecommunication Engineers (NARTE), Association of Public Safety Communications Officers (APCO), or National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER); or possess a Federal Communication Commission (FCC) radio-telephone license.
Additional Position Criteria
    Experience with analog and digital VHF land mobile radio systems.
