Plans Examiners review for fire and life safety the preliminary and final working drawings of new and remodeled buildings, paint spray booths and aboveground tanks in accordance with State regulations and adopted codes.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
General:
1. Provide direct supervision and support of assigned Plan Review and Fire Inspection staff.
Construction Program:
1. Plan review services including:
A. Attendance at project development meetings as required.
B. Building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing construction as they relate to fire and life safety.
C. Fire and life safety fixed fire protection systems.
D. Site review for fire department access and fireflow development.
2. Alternative materials and methods review (staff review for State Fire Marshal response)
3. Variances in construction and use (staff review for State Fire Marshal response)
4. Assist local fire authorities, as requested, in plan review services and code interpretation.
5. Support and supervise Division Inspectors in the inspection process following approval of construction documents for construction projects.
6. Provide field inspection services as required due to project complexity or available Division staffing.
State Building Inspection Program:
1. Support and supervise assigned Division inspectors in the completion of the Sate-owned and State-leased building and facility inspection program following the guidelines established in NAC 477.912.
2. Respond to complaints concerning fire and life safety in State-owned and State-leased buildings and facilities.
Licensing/Permits:
1. Review applications for special use permits for State-owned and Nevada State Fire Marshal Division regulated buildings and facilities where the Nevada State Fire Marshal Division is the Authority Having Jurisdiction for compliance to fire and life safety requirements of the Nevada State Fire Marshal Division for issuance of a special use permit as authorized in the IFC.
2. Review of inspection reports completed by Division Inspection staff of care facilities licensed by the State of Nevada, and corrective actions submitted by the licensed facility in response to the Division-issued inspection report for completeness and compliance to fire and life safety requirements of the Nevada State Fire Marshal Division.
3. Provide technical support and code interpretation services to Division Fire Inspection staff conducting State license inspections, care facilities, and State licensing agents.
4. Respond to complaints concerning fire and life safety in State licensed care facilities where the Division is the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
5. Provide technical support to the Licensing Bureau of the Division.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Three years of plans examination experience for a local or State jurisdiction acquired after attainment of ICC certification as a Plans Examiner and as a Fire Inspector I. The required experience must have involved the use of regulations and adopted building and fire codes and standards or the equivalent, and performance of complex plans review for general construction and common engineered facilities; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience as described above; OR one year as a Plans Examiner II in Nevada State service.
Special Notes
Successful completion of continuing education units is a condition of continuing employment.
Special Requirements
Certification as both a Plans Examiner and a Fire Inspector I by the International Code Council (ICC) is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment at the Plans Examiner III-Fire & Life Safety and Plans Examiner II-Fire & Life Safety.
A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.

The Examination
Application Evaluation Exam
The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.
