The Position
Dental Assistants assist dentists in the general or specialized treatment of patients in routine, emergency, and clinical research procedures in areas of diagnostic, preventive, restorative, periodontal, endodontic, pedodontic, orthodontic, oral surgery, and prosthodontic dental care.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series.
*THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME, DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED.* Duties may consist of any or all of the following: provide dental assistance to dental students and faculty within the School of Dental Medicine clinical programs. Assist in all areas of dental treatment including diagnostics, preventive, restorative dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, and prosthodontics. Collect and input patient information into electronic patient record. Schedule, confirm and when necessary cancel dental appointments for patients. Confirm patient eligibility for dental treatment. Check-in patients, collect and maintain patient records and data. Processes patient cash, check or credit card payment when needed. Ensures all dental cassettes and instruments are processed through sterilization. Ensures all dental cassettes are complete and in good condition for next use. Ensure all kits are wrapped and labeled with type of cassette, sterilizer number and the date the cassette was sterilized. Ensure all handpieces are maintained according to manufacturer?s instructions. Ensure all cassettes are properly sterilized and stored according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration Sterilization guidelines. Dispense dental materials and instruments to dental students using the dental tracking system. Use proper infection control procedures while transporting instruments to sterilization. Work Monday thru Friday, varying 8-hour shifts between 8am to 6pm. EEO/AA/Vet/Disability Employer.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or the equivalent and one year of experience working with the public collecting and recording information and/or explaining and clarifying basic information; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks.
Skills Required
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    All Dental Assistant positions at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) are required to pass: 1) a background I investigation; and 2) a sanction check performed through the National Healthcare Data Bank (NHDB)
