The Position
Maintenance Repair Specialists perform a variety of skilled work in two or more of the mechanical and construction trades in order to repair, construct, and/or maintain buildings, grounds and equipment.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
This position is at Southern Desert Correctional Center in Indian Springs, NV. Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties described in the series concept and either: 1) function as the sole assistant to the supervisor in the area of facility management by participating in project planning; reviewing work completed by contractors for compliance with plans and specifications; developing maintenance policies and procedures for the facility; providing information regarding facility needs and estimated costs for inclusion in the facility budget; and may supervise lower level staff by providing training, assigning and reviewing work, and evaluating performance; or 2) in a correctional environment, serve as leadworker for a regularly assigned crew of inmates the preponderance of the time. Inmate performance is documented through completion of periodic progress reports and incumbents are responsible for implementing security procedures which includes securing the work area from unauthorized inmates and accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools, materials and equipment.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Four years of progressively responsible experience under the supervision of journey level trades persons in two or more of the major building or mechanical trades and one year of journey level experience which included responsibility for performing a variety of repair and maintenance activities, laying out jobs and ordering materials; OR one year of journey level experience as a Maintenance Repair Specialist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Incumbents may be required to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays in addition to their normal work schedules.
    This position may be subject to call back.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required.
