Staff Associate Engineers perform professional engineering assignments not requiring licensure by the State Board of Professional Engineers & Land Surveyors.
This position requires knowledge of division regulations and statutes used in design, construction and decommissioning of dams as the position facilitates communication for dam safety compliance and assists in reviews of dam application and design documentation for acceptance. This position is tasked with conducting field investigations for the safety of dams program and timely completes a report documenting findings. Some field work is also required for dam inspections of up to 25% of the time throughout the state.
This position also performs technical and statutory review of water right applications and is responsible for all water rights activities in many ground water basins throughout the State. A major aspect of this position is dealing with the public on a daily basis, either in person, by phone, or e-mail. The position prepares permit terms for applications, drafts rulings, and drafts final water rights certificates. This position is also tasked with river inspection and permitting channel clearance projects.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Certification by the Nevada State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors as an Engineer Intern; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field; OR two years of journey level technical experience equivalent to an Engineering Technician III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Employees in this class who are not registered professional engineers may not represent themselves as such to other persons or entities.
Applicants for Staff I, Associate Engineer who have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering examination given by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying are not required to take the State's written test.
Special Requirements
Requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
Additional Position Criteria
Must be a currently registered Engineering Intern or Professional Engineer.
Applicants must have completed coursework related to hydrology.
Applicants must have completed coursework related to geotechnical and/or structural engineering.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).
