The Position
Economists prepare and conduct research, analysis and studies of economic, social, fiscal and other factors in relation to topic of study.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
This position is assigned to the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) Director's Office. The incumbent will develop forecasting models to project DHHS human services caseloads and expenditures; evaluate expenditure patterns; research and analyze the effects of growth in the number of enrollees, recipients and service utilization; determine the effects of economic conditions on expenditures; create forecasting models, interpret the results and modify the system as necessary; perform impact analyses by analyzing proposed state and/or federal changes that effect benefit program enrollment, eligibility and costs; take into consideration anticipated changes in federal and state policy and in the related environment that will likely influence the number of clients and/or the cost of services; analyze how different financial incentives impact service provisions; identify, quantify and forecast immediate and long-term cost impacts; communicate key results to various levels of management by distilling large amounts of data into concise, actionable information; communicate complex issues in an understandable written or oral form; produce projection reports and present projections to department and division management, the budget division and the legislative counsel bureau; identify variances between projected and actual values and explain the factors influencing those variances; oversee staff.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from an accredited college or university in economics, labor economics, econometrics, statistics or a related field and three years of experience in conducting statistical/economic data collection and analysis involving the application of advanced statistical, mathematical and economic principles and research design and procedures. One year must be performed at a level equivalent to the Economist II; OR one year experience as an Economist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.

Additional Position Criteria
    Experience working as an econometrician.
    Experience developing projection models.
    Experience with E-Views or other forecasting software program.
    Experience with Stata, Statistical Analysis Software (SAS), other software for statistical analysis.
