Accounting Assistants perform clerical accounting work in the maintenance of accounts and accounting records for State agencies.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others. Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
*THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME, DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED.* The Accounting Assistant III position in the Business Center South Payroll Department is responsible for processing the payroll for a minimum of 1500 student employees both work study and non-work study, casual labor including event workers for UNLV, CSN and NSC. Duties include, but are not limited to: maintaining payroll files and tax records; process pay including data entry of hours worked, process form W-4, journal vouchers, expense transfers, FICA/Medicare deductions, FICA Alternative deductions, tax sheltered deductions, payroll adjustments, demand checks, voids, direct deposit, misc. deductions and balance and pay various payroll payables. This position is crossed trained to assist other positions within the Payroll Department during peak processing times. This position answers the incoming phone calls to the main payroll number and distributes paychecks and direct deposit/pay card information to employees on payday. This position works closely with the Human Resources Offices and Financial Aid Offices for three institutions and various campus departments; assists student employees and casual labor with payroll related issues. Applicant must be able to multitask. Applicant must be proficient with the following; Microsoft Office, Excel, 10 key by touch. We are a fast paced high volume business center. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of progressively responsible clerical accounting experience which included duties such as responsibility for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and/or other accounting data; setting up computer spreadsheets to record, track, manipulate and report data; researching and interpreting financial data to prepare reports and respond to budget and accounts related inquiries; and reconciling accounts; OR one year as an Accounting Assistant II in Nevada State service which included clerical accounting duties as described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
