Biologists conduct fisheries, wildlife and/or habitat management projects and research studies including data collection, analysis and interpretation; develop and implement project proposals and work plans; prepare recommendations; and participate in public relations activities.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series.
Position will work with the Game Management Division to coordinate with Game Division and field staff (including seasonal technicians, graduate students, and volunteers) to effectively and efficiently conduct both field and data management work including mountain goat and bighorn sheep disease transmission monitoring, and mule deer migration and survival monitoring. Other duties as agreed upon by the Game Division staff could also include: Supporting area biologists with elk Landowner Incentive Tag monitoring; Supporting Landowner Deer and Antelope Compensation Tag biologist with counts; Participating in aerial and ground based wildlife surveys and wildlife capture and transplant projects; Documenting field observations; Collect and properly transfer biological samples from sick or dead animals; Monitor satellite collar data transmissions; Collect dropped big game collars; Convert previously collected Game Div survey, hunt, disease, and GPS animal location data into the proper electronic form.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, wildlife management or closely related field and one year of professional wildlife management experience such as conducting research studies including data collection, analysis and interpretation; development and implementation of project proposals for fisheries, wildlife and/or habitat management projects; OR one year of experience as a Biologist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
Work may be performed under adverse weather conditions and include extensive walking under difficult conditions in remote and/or primitive locations.
Working on occasional nights and/or weekends may be required.
Specialized experience may be required and will be identified at the time of recruitment.
Special Requirements
Statewide travel and outdoor work is required.
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Additional Position Criteria
Do you have GIS (Geographical Information System) experience, training, or course work to map, monitor, and analyze datasets?
Do you have experience, training, or course work experience with GPS?
Do you have experience, training, or course work with mountain goat and/or bighorn sheep?
